Tips On Choosing And Using A Bird Leash

If you are thinking about taking your indoor bird outdoors, you should probably get a bird leash. You can train the bird to use it and you will be able to take the bird with you without having to worry about an attempted escape. A bird leash or harness also allows the bird to fly at close range, so he will eventually learn to love going for walks or being outdoors. This is a good idea for larger types of birds.

A bird leash does not go around the neck like other leashes. It is actually more of a harness. They wrap around the bird’s chest and stomach area. There is a longer cord that fastens onto the back of the harness. This cord can be adjusted for distance and this is not uncomfortable for the bird. But it may take a few tries to place the harness correctly onto the bird. It can also help to learn some tips for using a bird leash.

When you go to purchase your bird leash, make sure that it is the correct size. At the pet center, describe your bird to the bird specialist. Include what kind of bird it is and the approximate size and weight. There are several sizes to choose from and they should fit snuggly around the body of the bird without being too tight.

If you have not handheld your bird very much, you may want to practice spending more time with the bird before you place it on a bird leash. You may have to try to fit the bird several times and if you do not have at least a friendly relationship with the bird, it will not work. The bird must be calm and happy and open to this experience. It is recommended that you only try this with younger birds. Older birds do not respond well to leashes, so you will want to start training the bird as soon as possible.

Trying to fit the bird with the harness may be a difficult thing to do on your own. It can help to have another person with you that the bird is familiar with. You should do this when the bird is hungry. This way you can use snacks to encourage the bird to learn. Allow the bird to follow a simple instruction and reward him. You should immediately take the bird outdoors as soon as you have fitted him with the bird leash.

There are 2 ways to fit the harness on the bird. The first way is for perching, which means that the bird will be setting on an object. In this case, the leash should be connected to the bird’s chest. If the bird will be walking or on the ground, place the harness on the back area of the bird. If the bird will be on the ground, make sure to keep an eye on it at all times. You will have to watch out for grass fertilizer that could harm or kill the bird if it is ingested and neighborhood pets that could attack the bird. Never let go of the leash and do not allow the bird to fly freely with it on. The bird will attempt to escape and may even be injured in the process.

If the bird becomes agitated and begins to breathe hard or appears stressed, save the training for another day. Make sure to reward the bird frequently even if it has a bad day and give it alone time after training. Never take the bird outdoors in rainy or cold weather and avoid going to crowded or noisy places while using the bird leash.
